Programs to Display the VeloMap
For anyone on the good side of earth velomap.org maps are shown in Qlandkarte_GT. QLandkarte GT is compatible with all big OS (Linux, MacOSx and well Windows too). Linux users can alternatively install Mapsource in WINE. Note .exe can be unpacked with 7zip (lzma compression).
Mapsource – I currenlty recommend to use 6.16.3 or higher. Earlier Mapsource versions do not show all ways and streets and are therefore not usable with the VeloMaps. Alternatively Basecamp 3 (best 3.2 or higher) is also a good program to display the maps.
Mac OSx users please use Qlandkarte GT (no map conversion needed) or convert maps and use Basecamp 3 or Roadtrip: convert-maps-for-mac-os-x-roadtrip/
Problems – Help – Tutorials
A Beginners Guide can be found here: get started with VeloMaps
Install Mapsource: tutorials/install-mapsource/
To install the maps, just run the .exe. (note you can unpack the .exe with 7zip)
Alternative: use create_mapsource_installationfiles.bat to create new installationfiles.
Alternative: Install maps with gmaptool: tutorials/install/gmaptool-install-maps/
Send Maps to GPS with Mapsource: tutorials/send-maps-to-your-gps/mapsource/
I recommend to always send maps to an external data card and not internal memory. (this way if something goes wrong, or maps would be damaged you run less danger of wrecking your GPS).
Alternative: Use create_gmapsupp.img.bat and place the newly created gmapsupp.img into /garmin folder on your GPS. Address search cannot be included this way.
Send maps to GPS with mkgmap (for Unix users): tutorials/send-maps-to-your-gps/mkgmap/
You can also send maps to your GPS with QlandkarteGT
Mapsource Error / debug Mapsource: There is a problem with the MapSource registry. Please re-install Mapsoures and start again Solve with Mapsource Fix Or with Mapset Toolkit
Please also read the FAQ
Current Issues
- The address search is more or less working correctly now (problems related to OSM address data crazyness excluded). Some problems with Umlauts may happen though.
- General: Autorouting over (very) long distances on GPS works only with Via Points. If you plan your routes on a PC solve this issue with WinGDB: plan-routes/
- Autorouting needs attributes like tracktype, lanes, routes, smoothness, class:bicycle and others to work well. So keep care to enter those details into OSM. (not all are needed, but enough for me to guesstimate wheter a street is cyclefriendly/mtbriendly or not).
- Non Connected ways and overlapping ways without node, this is the main problem and a problem of the underlaying map data – please check here: http://keepright.ipax.at/report_map.php
Only check/enable: "allmost Junctions" , "intersections without junctions" as well as "overlapping ways". This helps you to quickly spot the erros. You can then follow the link to Potlatch (or also JOSM is integrated for JOSM users) and quickly correct mistakes!
Watch out not to connect ways that are not connected in reality (i.e. a way crosses another on a brigde, here no connecting node is the right solution).
- If you use Windows 2000 you need to install the "reg" command : Reg cmd at Microsoft if you want to run the batchfiles (.bat files). The Batches are incompatible to earlier Windows versions.
- Note sometimes sea is missing. This is not an issue, but currently not differently possible. It is usually a problem in OSM data.
Notice on Updating Maps
Just run the velomap_country_setup.exe again.
Overlapping maps in border regions
While you can join maps of different countries, routing over the boundary is a bit shaky, and you will have one map overlaying the other with white background. As long as mkgmap cannot create randomly shaped overview maps (currently only rectangles), this problem is not solvable. There is however the possiblity to download a Europe map, which will be updated every 4-6 weeks. Get Europe Map here (donation needed): www.velomap.org/support/europe-map/
Maps
To install unzip and run "VeloMap_country_setup.exe", Qlandkarte GT users only need to unzip (7-zip lzma compresion) and open the map via Qlandkarte GT (choose .tdb and osmmap*.img).
Note 1: older GPS (non touchscreen) run slower the more maps are inside memory. For 60CSx or Vista/Legend HCx I recommend to not use more than 2 GB of maps, else your GPS gets slow.
Note 2: Address Search should work more or less correctly now on all GPS and Garmin Software. Address search only works if maps are sent with Mapsource/Basecamp.

Contourlines
Please note, at the boundaries there might be some artefacts. I cannot change this currently. The interval of the contourlines is 20m. Note DEM creation is not yet possible. Where Available I have used DEM data from viewfinderpanoramas.org. This data is of much higher quality than other DEM sources, however I cannot publish this data under CCBYSA 2.0 – therefore the copyright of the contourline data remains with viewfinderpanoramas.org and I cannot include this data into the normal map downloads. See the quality differences here: www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/
On Basecamp 3 contourlines will be visible as on GPS and not disappear. You have to create the installationfiles by using create_mapsource_installationfiles_with_mkgmap.bat (which requires you to install Java JRE 6, and download mkgmap). Alternatively you can also use create_mapsource_installationfiles.bat (requires installation of cgpsmapper as maptk is not possible anymore) – but it has some drawbacks.
Contourlines are seperate transparent maps that can be installed separately from the openmtbmaps. They will be shown on top of any other map on your GPS.
- If you prefer to download the contourlines zipped instead of as .exe installer look here: ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/openmtbmap/contourlines
- You can also download the countourlines as readymade gmapsupp.img here: ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/openmtbmap/contourlines/gmapsupp/

.TYP-Files – influence Layout and Contrast
On installation you can choose the layout of the maps. Traditional layout is for Qlandkarte GT, Mapsource and Basecamp and offers a good layout with medium contrast and design for big screens. On the GPS the "velo" layout offers high contrast for best orientation while riding your bike or hiking. To change layout simply rerun the installer.
You can change typfiles, and therefore the map colours, to your liking by using http://www.maptk.dnsalias.com/ to adapt the .typ files. Do not use http://ati.land.cz/gps/typdecomp/editor.cgi because it is not fully compatible and may corrupt the typfile.
Feedback
Please comment if you like theese maps or even better tell other people about them (forums, blog about it, twitter, etc…) In case maps break Mapsource or don't work – please write exactly which downloads don't work and the time of download as well as your OS and Mapsource version.. Please note, I will delete your comment without notice if it is explained here http://velomap.org/download/#problems-help-tutorials or in the FAQ
Please don't comment about a download link not working but instead resort to the server directly. Comments concerning this will be deleted (except whole Server/Mirror down).
Had the other week a problem with the searching of cities in the Europe map. When searching for i.e. Vienna I ended up in France etc. etc. Today I downloaded the Czech Republic country map. Same problem: searching for cities gives results that are hundreds of kilometers of target. Tracks, poi’s etc. are shown correctly. Would anybody know what I perhaps do wrong?
Don’t think that you actually do anything wrong. There are still bugs regarding search in mkgmap – the map compiler….
(as for Vienna – there is actually a “Vienne” in Limousin… but of course that shouldn’t be the problem…)
Thanks for your reply extremecarver. Would it be sensible to simply wait and download and install again in a couple of weeks? By the way, my compliments for all the work you are doing. I have planned and based my entire family biking holiday from Prague to Vienna on your maps.
well yes – mkgmap is constantly evolving. Sooner or later these problems should go away – when I cannot say. But also each time maps are regenerated things can change by osm data changes.
Hi,
looks like one part of Belgium is missing from the Dec 2 upload,
HB
Well I’m just rendering new maps. However I can’t believe it. That would mean that the extract is broken. Please report back if tomorrows maps are also missing tiles.
Still missing: https://picasaweb.google.com/hotbelgo/December92011?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCL_XoN-J-rWDSQ&feat=directlink
Well you must be doing something wrong. I just downloaded belbium and there is no missing tile. I don’t know what you are doing. Ur screenshot looks like MacOSx. So maybe you do a mistake when converting. You can use Qlandkarte GT with MacOSx without converting maps.
OK, no idea what it was but a bit of fiddling with mapinstall (which is only supposed to transfer to the GPS) seemed to do it.
Just plotting my next ride and noticed that I was taken down a bridleway (bd), which should be for horses only (even if not marked as cycle=no)

Hi,
I was using your maps on my Garmin for some time and recently I donated some Euros so that I can download the Europe map. It works great and I’m really happy with it.
I just want to let you know how much I appreciate your work and effort for this project!
That’s it…
have a good day,
Blueberry
your wellcome…
Hello,
I think I found an issue concerning velomap 17.06.
Secondaries are rendered wrong >=300m and > > >.
I tested it with velomap Switzerland, Germany and the velolegend on Basecamp Beta and GPSMAP62st always with velo-typ.
If it is possible to edit or update the .typ-files only can you offer advice?
Thanks in advance.
Some of my post got lost (perhaps it has been interpreted as html):
Secondaries are rendered wrong:
Between 300m and 1500m Zoom there are only small triangles instead of orange lines.
Ups sorry, there was indeed a bug in the velo.typ (it was correct in trdn.typ, so I missed it somehow). You can find an updated version (you have to use mapsettoolkit to change the .typ, because the FID needs to be adjusted to the relevant map, so symply copying it in and renaming it won’t work) here:
http://www.velomap.org/legend/velo.typ (rightclick save as)
Thanks for the quick help.
Works fine now.
Dear extremecarver, your maps are great thank you very much.
I can’t install the velomap for France. It shows installer integrity check failed. Could you have a look at it? Thank you. Matusp
Hallo,
Man muss sonst immer “nachzählen”.
Keep On Biking
Frank
It seems that today (20th March 2011) the Belgium velo map is broken. I can load the Netherlands, France and Great Britain maps and select them in MapSource, the Belgium map installs but isn’t subsequently listed by MapSource…
Hello
It seems to be a problem with Moldowa and Ukraine Maps. I can’t install both.
When i install the one its overriding the other and vice versa.
greetings rolf
Correct. I corrected Moldova – twill be online by 6AM tomorrow.
