Install Mapsource

Install Mapsource without owning a Garmin Device

Please use either  Mapsource 6.16.3 or higher (Mapsource version 6.15 or earlier do not show all ways – so they are incompatible). Alternatively you can install Basecamp v3 – which "just installs" without any difficult procedure.

Classic Way of Installation without already having Mapsource installed (please install everything as administrator)

  1. a) Download and install the  free Garmin Training Center. You can get it here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-04
  2. b) I assume that you can instead also install Garmin Basecamp which is more useful! (please report in a short comment whether it works or not). You can download Garmin Basecamp here:

  3. Download  Mapsource 6.16.3 or newer update from Garmin ( http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209 ).
  4. Garmin MapSource is now installed.
  5. Attention, Mapsource will not start until you have at least one map installed. So go to http://velomap.org/download/ and download the map(s) of your choice. If you prefer you can also do this step first.

Advanced Way of Installation without already having Mapsource installed

  1. Go to http://velomap.org/download/ and download the map(s) of your choice and Install them. You should have at least one map installed before you proceed to 2.
  2. Download  get Mapsource 6.16.3 (or higher) update from Garmin ( http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209 ).
  3. Unpack or extract the content of MapSource_6163.exe downloaded using 7zip (www.7zip.org), WinRAR or another good unpacker.
  4. From the extracted files, first run MAIN.msi.
  5. Then, run Setup.exe.  Note: The sequence to execute Main.msi and then Setup.exe is important to avoid “Previous MapSource not found!” error.
  6. Garmin MapSource is now installed.

Attention Mapsource <6.16.1 Users:

The maps are not compatible anymore with Mapsource versions before 6.16. You will miss a lot of ways and render the maps useles.

Parallel installation of several Mapsource versions:

Simply unpack a mapsource update (see links above), run MAIN.msi and then rename mapsource.exe to something else. e.g. mapsource_6.16.3.exe and then copy it into your main Garmin Mapsource installation folder (usually c:/garmin). Now you can decide which of the two versions you wan't to use. Note you will have to use english language then (there are some difficult hacks to solve this if you search the web – but learning English might be easier….).

The Mapsource download webpage makes it sound like you have to be running Windows to use the program (no mention of Mac system requirements). Is that true? Is there another program that Mac owners should download?

    Thanks.

I’m still gestting started. But as far as I cann see, your site ist the most useful and good for beginners.
Because my C:\\ is quite full, I have to install Mapsource on D:\\ but this seems to be impossible. There is no possibility to choose the install folder. Can you tell me a way to change it?
Have I to install the maps in the same folder where MapSource is installed? This would be so far C:\\Garmin and my problem increases.
Let me sy thank you for your great work here.

No you can install maps wherever you want. You may also move your garmin mapsource folder — however only if no maps are installed into it (else you have to change the map locations in the windows registry).
