As answering support questions takes a lot of time, I decided to only answer question from people, who donated 20€ or more www.velomap.org.
This enables me to give better support to those who value it.
Any premium member who is logged in, will be able to view the subpages.
If you don't want to donate any money to www.velomap.org – that's fine as well. There loads of online forums where people will give you help with your Garmin GPS and/or velomaps. This is better than here, because that way the word of the velomaps exisiting, will become better known.
Maybe I'll add some premium articles and premium maps (well possible for members to get exclusive access to a map of Europe) here in future too. Dunno yet.
I have still not been able to upload your maps to the Garmin Edge 800 from Basecamp. As in the attached picture, after selecting maps Basecamp Mapinstall runs through several steps, taking 30 minutes or more, and just when it looks close to completion I get the error shown. Pls advise.
Maybe you selected too much? Try with a small region. There is a 4GB limit (but maybe your SD Card is too small, or partly broken).
No, I kept the selected maps to 2Gb, which is the area I need. The display said there were 6Gb available on the card. Even when I select only a few maps sections it fails. I have re-installed Mapinstall and Basecampe several times. Garmin support says they do not support Velomap.
If I break the Europe map into the smallest pieces and try individually installing, does each subsequent install just add a new map? or does it overwrite each time?
can you send other maps, like the austria map or germany map? If so, then you have an error in your installation (I would assume you selected contourlines, but didn’t unpack them).
Hallo Felix,
habe die Veloeurope.7z herutergeladen. Beim Entpacken bekomme ich folgende Fehlermeldung:
“Datei wird extrahiert: C:\Garmin\Velomap\Europa\veloeurope.7z
Extrahiere nach “C:\Garmin\Velomap\Europa\”
Pfadangaben verwenden: Ja. Dateien überschreiben: Nein.
Extrahiere 66900000.img Unbekannte Komprimierungsmethode”.
Thank you Felix for your wonderful maps. We just spent 3 months in central europe. First time for me with a GPS (Montana). Would not like to tour without a GPS and Open Street maps again. We followed the big blue bike routes in almost every country. Fantastic.
We still needed 2kg of hard copy maps to route plan every day but during the day I would only look at the conventional maps a few times. Great combinantion. GPS for local detail and cycle routes and the hard copy maps for planning and backup. The conventional maps are also good as a substitute for a book if you can’t find an english book. For maps I ordered online at Stanfords of London. They seem to have everything you can think of, including the Bikeline guides.
happy they suited you fine. In Montana (I asume Canada) quality is still not the same as in goold old Europe (especially countries like Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and neighbouring countries to some less details). Hope in North America at some point details get better too.
Hi Felix.
Just want to ask a question about Garmin’s new activity modes that are available in Basecamp. I’ve noticed that if you select “Bicycling” as your activity, there’s an option to “Minimize Ascent” when calculating the route. Obviously this doesn’t work at the moment because choosing “Bicycling” ruins the route calculation. Since you include elevation data in your maps, do you have any plans to use the “Minimize Ascent” feature of Basecamp?
By the way, since you are now offering the ready-made MacOS format maps, I thought I’d give one a try. It worked perfectly for me—switching between layouts was easy and disabling/enabling countourlines worked well. Thanks for that, it’s made things a bit easier for me.
Tom
I don’t include elevation data. That is not possible with free tools right now (it would only be using pirated software, which I don’t do of course).
I still have to analise the new profiles in detail – I don’t really know if they only work with Garmin NT maps, or what consequences they have on mkgmap (OSM) maps.
Ah, OK. I thought it was so, but it seems Basecamp can interpret the contourlines on your maps. For example, using the latest version of Velomap Germany, Basecamp is able to draw an elevation graph.
Re. the new profiles—I have only ever used Automotive mode, so I never tried the old Bicycling mode. But the *new* Bicycling mode routes one away from “Highways”, i.e. away from the bike paths in your maps, because they are encoded as highways. I guess you know already that with the new Bicycling profile selected the routes are no good. As usual everything seems to work great with Automotive mode and Shortest Time.
Thanks for the reply.
Tom
yeah, it can show a height profile on routes, but Garmin decided not to do anything more (of course they could, but they don’t want to).
I am not able to download the US NorthEast map. It gives up after a certain time, and I end up with a useless partial download. What is wrong?
I cannot explain. Try another browser or a download manager – it shoudn’t crash. I’m updating the maps today again however, last time under CCBYSA 2.0 – so for freshest map wait til tomorrow.
I just loaded US west map; Mapsource crashes when I try to do anything at all, like set a waypoint, or begin a route.
Then you miss the contourlines (but set to have them installed in the installer, without reading that you then need to download/unpack them seperately) — have a look at the Europe installation tutorial here to see how it has to look.
Dear, as I travel to Sri Lanca, I downloaded the ASIA_16.12 velomap and only wanted to transfer the IN-CHENNAI(66630212) map to micro SD.
I am using MAPSOURCE V6.14, and got an error message from GARMIN asking to send it to GARMIN, which I did not do.Do you know if there is something wrong with those files, as the other maps worked fine.
Thanks,
Werner
That sounds very strange. Try Mapsource 6.15.6 or Basecamp though, 6.14 has loads of bugs. but I’ll check next week. Currently no stable good internet connection available.
