Hi Everyone. Just a quick note. Today my server crashed badly when upgrading opensuse from 11.4 to 12.1 (actually the whole /boot folder and other folders/data got reset or deleted). I spent most of today playing in backups and most things are up again. Note however that it is possible that some countries tomorrow may not be downloadable (especially velomap). Also possible map of Europe will be missing – other premium maps (north America..) will be available however.

Hallo allerseits, eine kurze Notiz.. Mir ist heute der Server gecrashed, und openmtbmap/velomap waren down. Ich hab den Server neu aufsetzen müssen // backups einspielen und die Website sollte inzwischen wieder (fast) vollständig funktionieren. Evtl werden die Kartendownloads (insbesondere Velomap) Morgen nicht online sein. Europa Premium Download könnte Morgen auch down sein, die Nordamerikakarten und andere sind dagegen schon wieder online.

Finally I have spent quite a lot of time improving the style-file again. Especially on the Velomap.

So first for the VeloMap. I have adapted the "traditional" map design of the openmtbmap map to the velomap. As there are less details to be shown, the velomap is even nicer to look at on a big screen now. I also updated the old velomap .typfile to be a bit more harmonic and showcase the differences in road / cycleway / path / footway / track less distinct but easier to grasp and corrected many many little bugs that I found (e.g. some roads did not show because of unrecognised surface values).

I also adapted the create_gmapsupp and create_mapsource_installationfiles batch files to work. However please note, that I advise you to first uninstall old velomaps – before installing new versions – because I changed the familiy IDs. This means the update will run clean, BUT the old maps will neither be overwritten, nor be uninstalled from mapsource (and hence only clutter mapsource map display, and your harddisk). Note that if you install the new updates into the same folder as the old maps, and then afterwards running the old uninstaller might cause damage to the new maps (forcing you to reinstall the new maps).

Note while all openmtbmap maps, will be downloadable from tomorrow, I think most VeloMap map updates will only be available from Friday onwards – as the mirror will sync too early to catch the updated maps. This will also in future be often the case.

For the openmtbmap I corrected missing river lines in some zoom resolutions, increased the size of the bicycle=no symbols for primaries/secondaries, and as for the velomap moved some more polygons to show at lower (18 and 19) resolutions. Also I reworked the "military" key and design. As more and more fences and hedges show up, I decided to render only those which have a name – as in general they simply obstruct the comprehensibility of the map. Also reworked when and how secondaries first appear.

The biggest change for the openmtbmap is a new color scheme to get rid of blue ways. I did this for the "clas" .typfile only right now, please give feedback in comments on how you like it in comparison to the standard colors / other .typfiles.

VeloMaps will be updated and working by 16.2.

Just a short note, will extend it later. I decided to compile the VeloMaps myself – and host them together with the openmtbmaps on GWDG for download. That means the VeloMaps get the much better Openmtbmap installer and will be updated once weekly or so.

First countries are uploaded already waiting to be synced at 03:00 from GWDG. Most countries will not be online however before 16.2 4AM though.

Update: I have changed the downnload links on the download page. Maps should be available by Wednesday 16. Feb. 5AM. Contourline map integration is not yet working.

The installer already has the option for the Mapsource/Qlandkarte GT typfile, but I have not yet adapted it for the VeloMaps. Might do that once I feel like I want to do it. Twas already bout 8hrs of work changing my scripts so that the VeloMaps can be rendered in the same go with the Openmtbmaps.

Autourouting reparied, map creation currently broken again

Well for everyone who is just using the style-file from GIT, I repaired the autorouting and it seems to be working very well now again. On the other hand there are problems again on the server in the map creation, which I cannot solve as it is not me working on the server. Probably soon the whole process of downloading the VeloMaps will be changed, therefore I don't give it much thougt right now. Currently most maps are broken and not working. In case you can allways use the openmtbmap instead.

VeloMaps available again

VeloMaps are now again available for download. After about 2 weeks of no updates the map creation process seems to be fixed (well according to the devs responsible for the server that renders the maps it is not really sure how long it will work and their is work on changing the process to make it more reliable).

Therefore here are the most relevant changes that happened over the last 4 weeks:

Slightly higher priority for icn,ncn and rcn cycle networks (lcn not changed) – biggest effect will be noticeable when the gps is working in motorcar/motorcycle setting. Should affect long distance routing for the good. On this map update (5.01.2011) routing has gone really bad though. I'm trying to bug it out so it will improve over the next days (currently have no local installation for rendering the velomap so I can quickly try out changes).

Addition of some new OSM keys like natural=bedrock, also cliffs will not be shown as areas anymore (except if area=yes…). On top I added some stupid nonducumented values for bicycle – as they are used according to tagwatch. Display ferry_terminals (had a typo before) and display surface=sand polygons and some more. National parks are now more or less transparent, in order to show the topography over the legal status. Also natural=basin & basin=* values are now differentiated.

Older changes not yet mentioned here:

26.11: After the big changes of the last two weeks, this time nothing major changed, except for adjusting the typfiles to show correct labels in Qlandkarte GT for all items that had no name assigned, and addition of german translations for many things into the typfile (note this only has any effect, if no name is given or exists in OSM.

19.11: I pushed trough many little enhancements trying to catch wrong sac_scale values and directly bin them, or in some cases add sac_scale and tracktype shortcut into the mapname, to give a clearer picture of a way (well better add mtb:scale instead, but for all ways where this essential info is missing….) – Also now all typfiles are for POI / Polygons in English and German, if no name is preset.

I have updated the Velomap to make use of the latest redesign that I spent on the openmtbmap layout. Meaning it will become much cleaner to look at and easier to distinguish the important stuff. Already since bout 1 week the POI and Polygons were updated, Tomorrows update should bring much clearer cycleway=* optics and better oneway treatment. Also some more stuff for cleaner map layout got implemented. I hope there'll be no bugs (like invisible roads), cause I had to move around quite a lot of stuff in the .TYP-file.

Also after last weeks trouble all countries but Germany seem to render fine again. Sorry that I won't solve Germany, but I cannot see what's going wrong on the server. This means you'll have to download europe instead if you need whole Germany….

EDIT 11.11. –now all maps are fine – also Germany

For the rest of the changes on what happened best look upon openmtbmap posts, however just as a quick note, as of Yesterday the VeloMap is updated (three times weekly) again – so 3 weeks of waiting are over…

Currently I am only working from my laptop, and the lack of a 24 or 27 inch monitor means that it is really difficult to work on the mkgmap style-files, because I simply don't see enough of it to work properly… There have been some changes in the past since the inctrocution of class:bicycle so I will just list them here:

This time the map updates bring autorouting considering class:bicycle

I'm not sure whether Germany will compile again, but do think so. Also from now on, POI will be displayed on all outdoor GPS and Garmin Mobile XT (previously Oregon/Dakota/Mobile XT missed many POI)

Last update somehow broke the .exe installer. Old installers still work for the same country though…. Next update should correct the installer, but also have a new feature. If you "avoid toll roads", there is much less focus on cycleroutes. So for those who minded that Routing had a very strong preference on cyclroutes (especially on GPS, much less apparent on Mapsource/Basecamp) – you can use avoid toll roads, to have a routing with only slight favour of cycleroutes. Actual toll roads won't be avoided by avoiding toll roads, as usually there exist no roads with toll for cyclists.
